Construction of Tonsley Technical College underway
Construction of Tonsley Technical College is now underway, with the building expected to be completed by the middle of next year, to welcome students in 2026.
The Tonsley project is a significant collaboration between the Department for Education and Flinders University’s Factory of the Future , which is an industry focused research and capability-building facility.
Students and families can now consider their options for 2026 at Tonsley Technical College, with industry training programs available for students in years 10, 11 and 12 in:
- Advanced manufacturing and engineering
- Automotive and energy
- Building and construction
The building of Tonsley Technical College, which will partner with the nearby Australian Science and Mathematics School, will be completed by the middle of next year, with the start of construction delayed this year by the removal of hundreds of square meters of concrete unexpectedly discovered under the site.
Australian submarine company ASC is an employer partner of the Tonsley Technical College and will provide employment pathways for school students into defence industries. ASC has a skilled workforce of more than 1,900 employees and ongoing workforce demand.
This valuable employer partnership will also bolster the advanced manufacturing and engineering pathway being offered at the technical college, helping to ensure students are workplace ready when they complete their studies.
Two pivotal South Australian group training organisations the Motor Trade Association (MTA) and the Master Builders Association (MBA) have also joined forces with Tonsley Technical College to provide employment opportunities and apprenticeships with host employers across South Australia.
In total, five technical colleges are being built to support students in Years 10 to 12 to complete their SACE while undertaking vocational education and training (VET) in specialist facilities, with one of those, Findon, already in operation.
Each of the five technical colleges will replicate the look, feel and flow of industry workplace environments. They represent a new style of learning with unique training programs designed and delivered in partnership with employers, with guaranteed job opportunities for graduates.
